A few days in the mountains.
By Bones
I’ve been bugging Bill to go to the mountains for a few days and when Anne said that we could all go to the cabin. I could hardly contain myself. Yippee! Anne and Bill also wanted to stop at the Catwalk in New Mexico on the way home. I love going to the cabin and I’ve never been to the Catwalk. There are big trees and streams with running water at the cabin. And there are lots of exciting things to see and smell in the mountains.
Every day we got to go for walks in the woods. There wasn’t very much snow, but it was cold enough for the stream to freeze in places. And it was really cool to watch the water bubbling under the ice as it went by.
Bill chopped some firewood and I helped. I like helping pick up the firewood and stacking it.
Each morning Bill wrapped me up in a warm blanket and we went outside to check the temperature. It was so cold that my teeth chattered.
Then we would race back inside and have something to warm us up. I love snuggling in warm blankets with hot chocolate on a cold day.
Since Christmas is just around the corner. Bill had brought some Christmas lights to make the cabin a little more festive. Bill even let me help put them up. I only got tangled in the lights twice. That may be a new record for me.
Every night we got to relax in front of the fireplace and enjoy the fire. Laying around in front of a fireplace watching the fire is one of my favorite things to do.
After a few wonderful days it was time to leave the cabin and go to New Mexico and visit the Catwalk. Thank you Anne! I love visiting the cabin.
On our way to the Catwalk we saw some mule deer on the side of the road. They were so friendly you could reach out and pet them.
Then we made it to the Catwalk.
The Catwalk was awesome! Bill said that he had visited them a long time ago before they had been washed away in 2012.
The Catwalk was originally built in the 1890’s to access mines farther up the canyon. Then in the 1930’s the Civil Conservation Corps rebuilt them. In 2012 and 2013 there was flooding that damaged and eventually washed the Catwalk away. We talked to a nice local man who told us that during the 2013 flood the water level reached 47 feet. Wow! That’s taller than a four story building!
In 2017 the Catwalk was rebuilt and open to the public again. The Catwalk Trail is over five miles long. But we only hiked the section that had the Catwalk. It’s a really cool trail to hike. I’ve never seen or hiked anything like it.
Thank you Anne! This was a great hike that I’ll never forget.
